Also ... Locally...

Open Doors began in response to a funding round that was announced as part of the Reconnect Program - an early intervention program for young people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, and their families. A number of people who were already working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender young people in Brisbane got together to plan and develop a service that could support young people and their families, as well as provide education to the community on the issues, needs and experiences they face.

The group was successful and Open Doors was funded from July 1 2001. Brisbane Youth Service agreed to auspice the funds on behalf of the Open Doors Steering Committee until such time as Open Doors became incorporated in its own right. The committee then began writing policies and procedures to ensure the service began with strong foundations and a clear focus.

Open Doors commenced direct service with young people in January 2002 and held an official launch on March 7 2002 which was attended by over 100 people with circus performers and a memorable drag queen performance.
